Speciality and Patient care in Retail Pharmacy

Introduction:

Retail pharmacy is the entrance point for a lot of Specialty medications indicated for the treatment of disease states like Cancer, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriasis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Hyperlipidemia, Solid Organ Transplant, HIV and Hepatitis C. Pharmacy staff in Retail may not have the capability of handling prescriptions written for these Specialty medications. The processes involve intake, benefit verification, third-party knowledge (pharmacy and medical), proper billing of loading/maintenance doses, days’ supply, storage conditions and third-party pre-requisite criteria required for prior authorizations. Retail Pharmacists too may find it challenging due to lack of practice in handling these Specialty medications.

Lack of proper handling may lead to delays in the availability of treatments to patients. Navigating these patients to the right resources is particularly important and directly related to their health outcomes. Therefore, we have created “Specialty and Patient care in Retail Pharmacy” to address these needs. Candidates will learn Specialty medications commonly encountered in Retail pharmacies and the processes required to successfully dispense them. By learning specific lessons presented in a systematic manner and tips from the author in the form of voice-over tutoring, candidates will be able to help patients with their prescriptions promptly or at least, navigate them to the right help.

By gaining more understanding and knowledge about Specialty medications, retail pharmacy staff will be able to practice patient care resulting in enhanced job satisfaction. Clinical practice at retail may reduce the burn out and therefore decrease the turnover rates of staff. Retail pharmacies may also benefit from increased volume of Specialty medications.
