Hello pharmacy technicians, lets walk through the journey of a pharmacy technician, that’s you! Your day is never predictable. You walk into your pharmacy and as soon as you punch in, you get, set and go!

In a community retail setting, you could get face a line of customers at the cash register or some 50 labels on the filling counter or a few baskets of go backs! Then of course, you have a trillion call lists- refill reminder calls, adherence calls, new patient calls, etc. And then, then……Immunizations! Now that you are certified to immunized- you have got to immunize everyone in the town! Are we done! Of course not! Who will do the MTMs!!!

While companies make every attempt to make your lives easier-constantly improving their technologies, centralizing the prescription fulfillment process or even remote phone answering services, other challenges keep coming hand in hand with these changes. Companies have started realizing the enormous work done by Pharmacy Technician and Pharmacists. Therefore, big box retailers have started considering increased pays, raises, bonuses and other incentives to realize the worthiness of pharmacy technicians. Walgreens, for example, have opened up higher level positions for eligible pharmacy technicians.

Now, lets consider the other settings like hospital, infusion centers, compounding pharmacies. Yes, the walk-in patients are not as much as the retail but still, you are bombarded with a bunch of tasks like processing orders, compounding medications for in-patients, sterile compounding for IV infusions, med reconciliations, etc. There are hardly any interactions with patients or caregivers or providers. There is not much involvement in direct patient care. There is hardly any participation in billing or financial assistance. These jobs may look like somewhat less stressful because of not having to deal with walk-in customers like retail but then it becomes monotonous after sometime! Isn’t it?

Traditionally, all of the above settings require pharmacy technicians to worked weekends and nights. Kudos to you all for doing this for your customers and patients. It’s not anybody’s job. Your job is at a much higher level than a cashier at a super market or a fast-food employee because you are a licensed professional and with that license, you also deal with a liability for medication errors. So, considering this, hats off to you for what you do and your sacrifices to make your job look seamless. Thank you for your contribution in the success of all pharmacies in the country. Thank you for the relentless service that you do, day in and day out, for your patients and customers.
